DJ PARI has made a name for himself slinging rare soul and funk 45s at clubs and festivals all across the u.s., europe, japan and australia. under the mantle of his soulpower brand he has worked with legends like james brown, roy ayers, leroy hutson, mandrill, ramp, sir joe quarterman and sharon jones and the dap-kings, and he has managed the r’n’b group the impressions of curtis mayfield fame. as a producer, DJ PARI was the creative force behind funk singers marva whitney, lyn collins and martha high, and his film documentary “the power of soul” made its global rounds from the cannes film festival to netflix. in more recent years, he has returned to his roots in jazz and acid Jazz. a resident of richmond, virginia, DJ PARI currently co-hosts the dance party series “the jazz explosion” in washington, d.c., and he is the presenter of “no room for squares,” a monthly jazz show on london’s totally wired radio. in the mid 90s, DJ PARI called los angeles his home, where he was part of a vibrant acid jazz and rare groove scene that took a hold on the west coast in those days. for his beyond set he compiled a blend of rare jazz-funk and nu-jazz tunes popularized at the time by the compilation albums released by the californian ubiquity and luv ’n’ haight labels.

NADIM also formerly known as MIDAN, is a cologne-based dj and producer deeply rooted in jazz and golden era hip-hop. in this beyond session NADIM opened up his vault and presents a set based on hip-hop tracks and its samples. listen carefully and enjoy the genius of producers making their beats based on jazz records.

EMMA NOBLE is part of the legendary dj duo NOBLE & HEATH. the london multi-talent is vinyl collector, songwriter, radio presenter and – as if that wasn’t enough – soul singer. her love for rare soul, funk and jazz is evident in every branch of her creative work. her beyond session was recorded alongside the elbjazz festival 2023, with a selection of rare soul from the late 60s to early 80s.

KILLA DU JOUR is a french vinyl-only dj whose sets are as eclectic as the crates she digs in. she has earned a reputation for the uncompromising musical integrity of her selections – frequently served with a dash of diva “je ne sais quoi”. she is a founding member and resident dj of the queer-feminist collective ‘lecken’ and co- organizes events on the killasan sound system since 2014. KILLA’s club selections are tailored for sweaty dancefloors but her bi-monthly radio residency on ‘refuge worldwide’ allows her to curate deeper, more personal music.
the records she picked for her beyond session are uniquely close to her heart as she received them from her ivorian born father who had a brief stint as a radio dj in paris, retiring before she was born. he only opened up about this part of his life after she herself started spinning wax and even played at a ‘wax treatment’ party, subsequently summoning her to haul the rest of his collection to berlin. the ‘rare african wax’ vinyls featured in this beyond episode are releases from the period 1970 – 1986 and stretch from funk and afrobeat to rumba and soukous.

a dj with a love for deep dancefloor jams, MICHE has fast become one of london’s most exciting young selectors. at just 29 years old, he has already released his own compilation, “with love”, on brighton-based mr bongo records, been lead programmer for london audiophile venue spiritland and co-founded reissue 7”s label discs of fun & love. specialising in long and expansive sets that showcase his passion for modern soul, private press disco, brazilian mpb rarities, jazz dance and deep house, MICHE djs regularly across the uk and europe. it’s a sound encapsulated by his debut compilation “with love” – a 16-track selection of “music with soul from across the world”, released by mr bongo in september 2022. voted compilation of the week by bbc 6music’s lauren laverne, it has garnered support from the mainstream and underground alike, catapulting MICHE to the forefront of a new generation of record-hungry selectors. “here is a selection of some of my favourite brazilian compactos ranging all the way through the late 60s to the mid 80s, featuring samba, mpb, bossa and a lot of beautiful tracks so warm the soul in the cold hamburg weather!“

SKINSHAPE is the studio project of british musician and producer will dorey. SKINSHAPE grew out of a love for old music and the way it sounded. the sound has roots in many genres but in particular 60s – 70s funk, soul, reggae, psychedelic rock, afrobeat and folk. as he rarely spins records we are very pleased he did a session for the beyond series at the mojo jazz café. he focused on african music from 60s to 80s.

JUKKA SARAPAA is the founder & co. owner of timmion records ltd. when jukka is not touring the world playing drums with cold diamond & mink, he can be found recording and producing sweet soul, raw funk or cutting master lacquers for the next 12′′ or 7′′ of your favorite jazz/ pop/ house/ metal etc. artist at timmion records studios inside the subterranean caves of kaapelitehdas, helsinki, finland. when playing records, his selections tend to take the obscure route, leaning on moody mid-tempo soul and ballads. nevertheless, he’s sure to also have your favorite organist and stevie wonder records back home neatly filed up.

EDNA MARTINEZ grew up in cartagena de indias, in the colombian caribbean which influences her musical selection. she routes sounds from the caribbean african and arabic worlds. she is dj and curator and is based in berlin where she works on different projects such as latinarab, a live set and musical curatorship that involves arab and caribbean percussion on the set and artists from these areas on stage, is co-founder and curator of el volcan, the first and only picó sound system night in germany, and is also the woman behind prende la vela, an event that combines documentaries and live and electronic music. she also moderates monthly radio programs on radio alhara (palestine) and worldwide fm (london). EDNA MARTINEZ is a lover of vinyl records and has collaborated with record labels such as analog africa, nicolas jaar’s other people records, and is currently working on a project with strut records uk. enjoy her fine selection for the beyond series of proper caribbean sounds such as zouk, kompa, champeta, guaguancó, latin jazz and rumba from the 60 ́s to 90 ́s.

SKOR 72 growing up soaking in graffiti and rap culture during the late nineties as a teenager. this set the foundation of becoming a writer and dj first, a promoter later and at last a record shop owner in 2015 with the opening of „vary“ in leipzig. “hip hop remains the biggest part of my cultural identity and even though i had & still have a lot of fun exploring its roots and siblings, all roads always lead back to it eventually. no wonder my selection for this beyond session is consisting of my favourite reference points of what rap music became over the course of the past few years, especially after being in touch with its culture over the last two and a half decades. expect some hard to find & even harder to acquire rarities and something that won’t be out for a while.”

TINA EDWARDS is a broadcaster, dj and music journalist based in london. she hosts jazz uk:spitting fire, a bbc documentary spotlighting the uk’s groundbreaking jazz scene. tina’s driven by sharing the best new releases and uncovering forgotten gems of the past – on vinyl wherever possible. she’s been a worldwide fm host for five years, and also makes radio for jazz fm, british airways and bbc radio 3. „the uk has one of the most vibrant and progressive jazz scenes in the world and i get so much joy from sharing records that i think people are going to love as much as i do. this beyond session is purely instrumental; i wanted to make it perfect for working or relaxing.

jan tarazi aka THE JAN is a northern soul dj, promoter and a rare soul record collector. he came in touch with sixties soul in the early eighties mod scene. since 2003 he’s been running classic northern soul parties in hamburg like “for dancers only”, “the soul seven” and the annual “hamburg soul weekender”. for the mojo club beyond series he packed some rare modern soul records in his bag. his 2nd love beside sixties soul.

DAVID NESSELHAUF is usually seen playing a bass on stage with bands like diazpora, hamburg spinners, the drawbars and solo – but, on occasion, will drop the needle on some obscure vinyl in public. it ́s more like playing his girlfriend ́s records very loudly than actually djing, says the 41-year-old. nonetheless, his blend of retrofuturistic music is a warm and trippy experience to the listener – and an introduction to his solo work.

PRETTY SNEAKY producer and dj for the pretty sneaky label. for the beyond series he created a musical journey from spiritual jazz and minimal music to classic field recordings. his selection has a great free jazz approach. the artist wants to remain hidden.

MARC HYPE’s career spans almost 30 years, there’s no doubt he is a sure-shot-party-rocker who has been representing a more eclectic view on hip hop & funk from the very beginning. he started his dj career, inspired by the late great jam master jay, around 1988 and went through the several decades of hip hop with countless releases, tours and competitions like the german „itf dj championships“, which he won twice in `98 & `99. nowadays he’s travelling the world with his 45s bag as part of the berlin/ london/ hamburg-based „dusty donuts“ crew & label, as well as a member of the uk-based international „45 live“ dj circle. still spreading the original values of hip hop culture and crate digging. for the mojo club beyond series he puts together a selection of modern funk & disco edits of the past decade. trying to present the versatility of the genre, which stands in the tradition of classic boogie & p-funk with an actual zeitgeist appeal on the production.

FEMDELIC aka marisa akeny is a berlin-based multitalent. she has been part of the german band „laing“ as a dancer & choreographer, expressing herself designing clothes and art under the pseudonym „massiggi“. she is known as a vinyl dj, operating in the worldwide funk scene as one half of „the brides“ dj crew and for being part of the team behind the „cool whip“ parties in berlin. femdelic & funkarella are the co-founder of several funk parties which have been taking place in berlin since 2006. they are the female ambassadors of funk in germany. after organising the ‘frontfrauenfusion’, they took part in the series ‘church of funk’ and in 2014 established the ‘cool whip’ events with international bookings. marisa`s vibrant love for 80s and late 70s music led her to this special dj set for beyond, travelling in time from boogie funk to disco and back.

DAVIN UNDERWOOD is a u.s. native currently residing in hamburg, where he is a member of the isle of wax collective which hosts parties, a dj mix series and a youtube channel dedicated to lesser-known records that deserve a second look. he is also the host of ‘uniform variations’ on hamburg’s hallo:radio, where he explores classic and contemporary sounds in electronic music from ambient to club-oriented dance music. for the beyond series, davin chose to focus on one of his favourite underground movements in dance music history: the golden era of italo house from 1989-1993, colloquially referred to as ‘italian dream house’. as he draws from his collection of largely unknown records (and a few classics) from the period, you can expect warm piano chords, elements of balearic, ambient and deep house, with a loved-up, hands-in-the-air finish.

TEREZA is a dj, radio host, curator, organiser and tastemaker. she initially made a name for herself in germany and europe through countless hip-hop gigs. her personal milestones include her waters event series, which from 2016 to 2019 musically revolutionised hip-hop parties in hamburg, stuttgart and munich etc, as well as the mixtape „baduology. an ode to erykah badu.”. for the mojo club beyond series, TEREZA presents her personal disco highlights from ’78 and `79. „for my sets and radio shows, i usually dig through contemporary, soulful electronic club music of various genres – house, broken beat, uk garage, polyrhythmic stuff, footwork, jungle. by chance i came across the reissue of sparkle’s eponymous record in early 2020. i was immediately taken with „disco madness” and realised that a lot of what i discovered for myself in the process came from 78/79. “hot shot” by karen young, “i love the nightlife” by alicia bridges. “watching out” by split decision band. “24hours in the disco” by kiki gyan. feelgood songs that automatically draw me into their glittering world, instantly put a smile on my face and make me want to dance. so it’s not surprising that those songs accompanied me mostly through the first few weeks of the pandemic, the following winter and are doing it again now.”

YUNG_WOMB is a dancer, performer and dj based in hamburg. she hails from colombia and is of afro-caribbean, arabic and u.s. american. together with jaxx tms, nissa, senu and slimgirl fat she is co-founder and member of the female* bipoc dj collective slic unit and resident-host for [sic]nal and half moon brooklyn radio. influenced by the volume of cds her parents would buy to prepare their dance-classes, she would invent her own performances to an overload of different folkloric sounds from around the world, but also hip-hop, neo-soul and merengue hip-rap of the 90s and 00s. so, it comes as no surprise that you can hear how heavily she is influenced by the way the tune makes her move. from turntables to cdjs, not only does she have diverse mixing preferences but also a truly broad range of music styles and moods she likes to play. for this episode of beyond YUNG_WOMB only selected from the collection of vinyl she inherited from her father, making us move and clap to songs of the golden era of salsa from the latin-diasporic 70s new york scene.

with an enormous warmth in everything he does – LUDWIG MAUSBERG shows deep passion for music. record selector, musician and co-founder of the label THE CRATE & DEEPER. picked some of his favourite tunes from the 80s era of electric soul music. this genre is wide and offers many releases. finding the timeless and unique ones was the aim in this set.

AMIR ABDULLAH aka DJ AMIR is part of hip hop history as a sample excavator, music historian, compilation curator and dj who’s already acknowledged alongside some of his childhood heroes. as a dj he’s rocked parties from brooklyn to berlin, where he’s been based for the past few years; as a producer he reinterprets classic cuts into innovative remixes; as an educator he lectures on topics ranging from cultural appropriation in hip hop to the history of independent jazz; as a radio dj his monthly residency for worldwide fm, the khronicles, airs every first tuesday; and as a curator and label executive he’s responsible for over a dozen releases for his label 180-proof records. his latest release, distributed by BBE RECORDS, is dj amir presents STRATA RECORDS -the sound of detroit volume 1 and coming soon is an album he executive produced and is particularly proud of: STRATA RECORDS – the sound of detroit – reimagined by JAZZANOVA. amir’s love of jazz magical musical moments buried in forgotten grooves led him to his initial fame as one half of the legendary mixtape and dj duo: KON & AMIR. their half-dozen “on track” mixes and three “off tracks compilations for BBE. while he’s best known as a dj and compiler of choice tunes, amir’s expertise also extends to the business side of the music industry hustle. he helped launch WAX POETICS’ record label where he worked until 2010. in 2011 he started his record label, 180-PROOF which owns the exclusive rights to release STRATA RECORDS’ influential back catalogue and unreleased sessions. for the mojo club beyond series he picked his favourite disco jazz records.

music lover from paris, SHARLIE has been collecting vinyl for many years. it was in 2018, when she arrived in cologne that she first introduced her musical universe to the general public, exploring genres and sounds without any boundaries. with a particular affection for african music in general, her selection for beyond is dedicated to the rare resonances of west africa, the region from which she draws her roots. from the melodious kora of senegal to the juju style of ghana or the voodoo groove of benin, this sonic journey takes us through the richness of the west coast from the 70s to the 90s.

MULUGETA NERAYO aka DJ MUNE_Ra is the creator and curator of the famous party series “whats wrong with groovin’”. in his sets, he plays the whole field from organic hip-hop, jazz, native tongue over boom-bap, afrobeat, brazil to world music and everything else that gets you moving. rare vinyl tracks provide for a varied odyssey between the history and future of the groove. for the mojo club beyond series he has selected exclusively groovy african tracks from the 70s only.

BELLA has been collecting reggae music for over ten years now and she really has a sweet spot for it, especially for the beautiful sub genres rocksteady and lovers rock. the tracks she picked for the BEYOND mix are by female artists from different eras and backgrounds and reflect their powerful perspective on life’s struggles, romance and spirituality. all of the songs are personal favourites of hers which never fail to move her every time she listens to them. she hopes they will have the same effect on you.

FALK SCHACHT is a well-known music journalist, podcaster and tv host. his knowledge of hip hop music and the history of this genre goes way beyond the ordinary. for the beyond series, he chose a funky and noisy selection between breaks, old-skool rap and dance. tracks that inspired him throughout his career.

the musician and producer from hamburg, germany is not only the driving force behind internationally acclaimed funk groups mighty mocambos and bacao rhythm & steel band. björn also runs the label mocambo records. an avid cratedigger himself, his beyond mix for the mojo club digs deep into rare grooves from the caribbean that inspired his work with the bacao rhythm & steel band.

POCKET COSMOS is known for retro-future boogie vibes, elegant aor and edgy synth pop. as a resident dj in his beloved city of hamburg and frequent visitor to brussels` fruit radio, he’s all about love for an unmistakable cosmopolitan sound. in his set for the beyond series he moves from experimental leftfield pieces around some of the protagonists of Japanese electronic music to the seemingly naive 80s city pop of the land of the rising sun during the heyday of the economic boom. sophistication meets the exuberant cruise through neon-lit tokyo.

music is his sanctuary – GÖTZ BÜHLER aka herbie hitchcock is a full-time jazz music enthusiast. the passionate record collector works as a journalist, label manager and presenter for jazzed.com, jazz thing, bytefm and the orchard. he has interviewed isaac hayes, prince, missy elliott, dr. john, ray charles, donald byrd and hundreds of other musicians and produced albums with the likes of roy ayers or bobby byrd for the label soulciety in the 90s. among his many liner notes are those for all thirteen compilations in the series “mojo club presents dancefloor jazz“. for his beyond mix he picked some of his favourite jazz tunes. this diasporic trip offers traditionals in less than traditional versions.
